Description
A heuristic evaluation or expert review uncovers key usability issues with a design while using only one evaluator. It is a quick and efficient way to evaluate a user interface based on usability best practices. Ideally this type of evaluation is performed as part of the iterative design process. Heuristic evaluations can be used in conjunction with
usability studies. The two approaches complement each other, because heuristic evaluations can be performed early on and can be used to uncover the most glaring usability problems. The results of a heuristic evaluation inform a redesign of the interface, at which time a usability study can allow more fine-tuning as it uncovers more, possibly unanticipated usability problems.
One of the advantages to heuristic evaluations is that they do not require users and can be conducted relatively quickly. Although the evaluation can be left open-ended, clients are often curious about specific tasks that a user must be able to accomplish. Klein Research can help clients determine the primary goals of the product and the tasks a user must be able to accomplish using the product or system. From there, we develop a comprehensive list of tasks and evaluate the product or system to uncover stumbling blocks in the interaction.
Number of participants
No users are required for a heuristic evaluation.
Deliverables
One detailed results document is produced, which includes details on the analysis and a set of recommendations for improving the product or system.
The findings report is typically delivered in Word or PDF format. If requested, summarized findings and recommendations can be developed into a PowerPoint presentation.
Timeline
The timeline varies depending on the extent of the analysis, the number of tasks, and/or the number of areas included in the evaluation. In many cases, the heuristic evaluation and delivery of detailed results can be completed in as few as three to five business days after receiving a purchase commitment.
